Scanning your computer with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a good place to start if you have noticed something suspicious and are concerned your computer may have a virus. A few obvious things that could indicate unwanted or potentially harmful software running on your computer:
- computer running much slower than normal
- web browser default search engine changed
- web browser home page changed
- pop up ads appearing in windows outside of the web browser
To get started, open your web browser and visit https://www.malwarebytes.com/antimalware/ and click the free download button.
After the file has finished downloading, locate the file in your downloads folder and double-click to start the install.
The installer will ask you to choose the language you wish to use for this installation.
Now you will get a message recommending that you close all other applications and temporarily disable your firewall and antivirus.
To turn off Windows Firewall, open the Start Menu and start typing “firewall”. Click on Windows Firewall to edit the settings.
In the left sidebar choose “Turn Windows Firewall on or off”
Under Private and Public Network Settings, check the boxes to turn off Windows Firewall and click OK.
You should see the Private and Public networks turn red to show the firewall is off.
Close the Windows Firewall settings, make sure no other programs are running, and click Next on the Malwarebytes installer.
Accept the terms of the license agreement and click Next.
Next is an information page – click Next to proceed.
The default install location should be fine so click Next to accept.
Click Next to accept the default Start Menu folder for the shortcut to be placed in.
Choose whether or not to have the installer create a desktop icon and click Next.
Review the install details and click Install.
Wait while Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is being installed.
When it is finished you will be presented with a final screen and an option to enable a free trial of Anti-Malwarebytes Premium that is enabled by default. If you are interested in the Premium product leave this checked. Anti-Malwarebytes is designed to run seamlessly side by side with most other anti-virus products to provide an additional layer of security. Click Finish on this screen and Anti-Malwarebytes will launch.
At this point you should go back and follow the previous directions to turn Windows Firewall back on along with any anti-virus software that you disabled for the installation.
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware will be checking for updates and you can start a scan at any time from the Scan Now button on the bottom of the Dashboard tab.

Once the scan is complete you will see a screen like this showing the total number of threats identified on your computer.
In the picture above no threats were detected. If Malwarebytes Anti-Malware has detected potential threats, they will be placed into quarantine and can be viewed from the History tab. From here anything you do not recognize as legitimate software can easily be selected and permanently deleted.
